Advertising and Products

Sadly folks, we have been dudded. Eros Boutique offered a marketers' program where, if you had one of their approved ads on your website for 3 consecutive months, you got $250 worth of free sex toys. We put the ad up, advised them of it so that their bots could automatically check it every day for the 3 months and sat back and waited. At the end of the 3 months, we contacted them, but got no reply. We contacted them again, but still have not got a reply. We advised them that if we had not heard back by 24 July 2009, we would be taking the ad down.  Eventually I received a bounced email message, so I tried again.  I can understand one email message going astray, but not five.  And before you ask, yes, the email address was correct; I'd clicked on the link on their own website, so it wasn't a transcripting error on my part.  I have since sent a further four emails, some to different addresses, and have received more email bounces.

We have still heard nothing from them. As a result of our experience, we would not go near Eros Boutique again and we don't recommend that you do either. We can only conclude that this was either a rather clever ploy to extract free advertising from unsuspecting website owners, or the company has gone bust. Their website is still there in all its glory; I pity anyone who tries to purchase via the website, as I think they will lose their money.

A Rant Against "Panties"

I've been meaning to give voice to this rant for quite some considerable time.  Does anyone actually know anyone who seriously refers to undergarments as "panties"?  As far as I'm concerned "panties" are something that creeps have fetishes with, not something that girls or women wear.

"Knickers" yep, "undies" fine, "underpants" perfectly acceptable, "jocks" is ok, even "scungies" (a uniquely Australian term I believe, for describing something truly horrible, although it possibly has its origins someplace else).  But never, in my opinion, "panties".

I cringe when I hear the word, particularly when it is used in porn.  It is usually said in such a lecherous tone, and is always in the context of a "teen", that I can't help wondering if the writers are using it to fulfil some sick fantasies of their own.  Maybe it's just me; maybe other women don't find the term "panties" to be gross and creepy.

I hate it when the medical profession uses it, I hate it when journalists use it.  "Underpants" is a perfectly acceptable description, and is more accurate, "underclothes" is fine, even "pants" works.  But not "panties".  Boys (and men, for that matter) don't wear "panties", so why should anyone of the female gender?

Rant over now folks, back to normal scheduling.

The Moral Minority

I hate the moral minority. You know the people I'm talking about. That small but very vocal group who get outraged at rude words on TV, nipples during Superbowl, you know really serious, weighty issues that will bring civilisation crashing down on top of us unless something is done.

In NSW, when I talk about the Moral Minority, I'm talking about a guy called Rev Fred Nile. He's like one of your US-style right-wing religious wingnuts only worse. In Australia, most of these types are based in our state of Queensland but this one seems to have slipped the net somehow and ended up in NSW. He's managed to get himself elected to the senate here for the last 400 years or so. I think the only thing keeping him alive is sheer force of moral outrage.
