As both Mrs Dave and I are big, hemp-wearing, organic-loving hippies, we prefer to use organic lube. Up until now, there hasn't been much of a range of organic lubes available here in Oz. There's our old favorite Sylk and a couple of others (such as Sensua Organics) that we tried before but with limited success. In the last year or so there have been a few more come onto the Australian market so we thought we would give them a go. The first is Pink Water for Women.
There are a few lubes in the "Pink" range. "Water" is, obviously their water-based product. They also do a silicone and a hybrid lube. Watch for reviews of those in the near future. It's all natural and free of all the nasty chemicals you find in a lot of lubes. The "For Women" bit is code for "pH neutral, natural and kind to delicate skin". Obviously men don't want that in a lube. We prefer to lube up with a mix of axle grease, gravel and battery acid. Leaving aside minor niggles with their marketing, we put this one though its paces.
Pure Water comes in a nice little 50 ml pump pack with a lockable pump so it won't spill. It's not a thick gel-like lube but not thin and watery either. Its consistancy is more like a thick oil.
As we have a few lubes to review in the near future, we decided we needed a standard series of tests we could use to objectively compare one lube to another. We decided to cover 4 scenarios - sex, solo play, solo play with toys and anal. Various lubes are better for certain things and worse for others. We figured that by assessing each of them against all 4 criteria we could report on the strengths and weaknesses of each lube. Pretty thorough aren't we?
First up, we used this for straight sex. And liked it. A couple of small pumps is all it needs to lube up and it stayed nice and slipery for ages. It's a bit thicker than our regular lube (Sylk) so there is a bit more friction which I don't mind but Mrs Dave can find a bit uncomfortable if it starts dragging. This one was just right though. Not so slippery that there is no friction and no too thick to make things uncomfortable. Performance for sex 8/10.
Next we used it for solo play. Again, a couple of squirts is all it needs to get started. Mrs Dave found that it stayed slippery for ages but I found it dried out a little and needed to be topped up a couple of times. This is pretty usual with water based lube. Performance during solo play - 7/10.
With toys was next. We chose Mrs Dave's favorite wooden dildo (mostly because it's winter here and the glass toys get really, really, really cold). Some thinner lubes tend to drip right off toys and aren't much use but this one was good. The lube was thick enough to stay where it was put and lubed the dildo up nicely. It stayed slippery and Mrs Dave had a wonderful time. She said (after reading this) that she did have to reapply it. Performance with toys - 7/10.
We haven't used this one as an anal lube. For anal you really want a thick, very slippery lube. This one is, for us, too thin and not slippery enough for anal play.
The only small gripe we have with this lube is that it's in a hard plastic bottle which doesn't transmit heat very well. This may not sound like a problem but in the middle of winter it takes ages to warm the lube up. There is nothing worse than snuggling up warm in bed then feeling ice cold lube on your bits. That aside, we have been using this one for a week now and have really liked it. It is a bit pricey but our weeks' use has barely put a dent in the bottle. It is very economical. Mrs Dave has mentioned that she did see it in a much larger bottle, around 200ml or so, but she wanted to start small, just in case it was yucky. Overall Rating - 7/10.
