Another lube review for you this time. As you may remember we are on a quest to find a replacement for Maximus which is our regular lube for toys and anal play. As those of you who have been following the action will remember, we dropped into our local adult shop and bought a bunch of lubes to try. That night at the supermarket, as we were wandering down the aisles we spotted the KY jelly. Many, many years ago, we used to use KY as it was the only lube you could get back then without visiting a sleazy sex shop. After the Internet allowed us to buy things like lube from the comfort of our own home we drifted away from the KY and never went back. Seeing it on the shelf though we thought we'd give it a try again.
These days, with the huge variety of lubes out there, poor old KY tends to make people think more of a visit to the Gynecologist rather than a hot and steamy session in the bedroom. Plain, un-sexy and reminiscent of visits to the doctor. It is however cheap and readily available pretty much everywhere. There may well be places where this is the only lube available. Figuring we were doing a community service by reviewing this one, we invested in a small tube, stripped off and got down to business.
For regular sex KY does OK. It's certainly slippery but it is very thick and gluggy so it doesn't feel as nice as most other lubes. It also tends to go everywhere and leave everything a bit messy. It works though and is certainly better than nothing. 5/10
Solo play next. I'm quite happy with KY as a wanking lube. It lasts well and is good and slippery, however it does get messy. Mrs Dave though wasn't happy with it. At the risk of over-sharing, she likes some fast clit action to get over the edge and KY was just too thick. She couldn't move fast enough with the gluggy lube in the way so it was a strike out for her. 5/10
For the toy test we got out Mrs Dave's new wooden dildo. The KY did OK. It slicks things up nicely and lasted pretty well but again, feels gluggy and makes a mess. 6/10.
Lastly we gave it a go anally. We were after a thicker lube for anal play and KY is certainly thick. I tried it first with my set of anal beads and it did a good job. Mrs Dave gave it a go as well and was able to take my finger, our Small Butty Vibe and finally the knobbly end of her wooden dildo pretty easily. It's actually a really good anal lube. I guess that comes from being designed to allow doctors to stick large and potentially uncomfortable implements in places where the body doesn't want them. 8/10.
Overall, KY is a pretty basic lube. There are much better things out there now but if you can't get hold of them, it will do the job. It's pretty un-sexy stuff and it makes a mess but it's better than dry sex. You also tend to use quite a bit. Due to its thickness you tend to use it in globs rather than dribbles so our testing used pretty much the whole tube. It is cheap though, so that's less of a problem than with some of the more expensive lubes we have tried. The other thing Mrs Dave wasn't happy about is that the tube doesn't tell you what's in the stuff - only the box does (Chlorhexidine Gluconate & Methyl Hydroxybenzoate, which are the preservatives; if you want more information, consult Wikipedia). So if, like us, you chuck the box but need to refer to it later, you're stuffed.
Where KY comes into its own is as an anal lube. Especially for anal beginners who like a thick lube to provide a bit more cushioning on delicate tissues. Mrs Dave was able to take more in her bum than she had ever taken before.
Even with that though, we still can't give this more than a 5.
