Home Reviews Lubes Maximus Lubricant

Maximus Lubricant

Occasionally with our toy orders we receive samples of lubricants to try out. One that we received recently was Maximus, and as we'd received several sachets of it, we decided it was worth reviewing it. It is clear, reasonably unscented, super slippery and thick, so good on all counts so far. It felt ok to the touch, so we gave it a shot.

The first comment I need to make here is that the sachets, whilst a great idea and generous in their sizing, don't store it well once opened. As there was far more than we needed for one session, we folded the top over and put it aside for later. Bad mistake. The top of the sachet got soggy, it started to leak, we got lube all over the drawer and it made a general mess. We ended up having to squeeze that sachet, and the couple of extra ones, into an old, clean lube bottle, so that it was easier to deal with.

How was it in use? Well, it is definitely thick, slippery and lasts for quite a long time (which, given that it is water-based, is quite unusual). The manufacturer (the same people who make Liquid Silk) claims that its high glycol content is what makes it last. Whatever the reason, it does last. We aren't prone to eating the stuff, and rarely go down on one another after lubing up, so I can't comment on whether it has a taste or not. It lasted really well, and took ages before it started to dry out. Nicely, you don't end up sticky after it dries. Did I mention that it really lasted well?

So are there any disadvantages to it? Well yes, there are. Firstly it contains several parabens as its ingredients, to preserve it and deter microbial growth. The trouble is that parabens can, in some individuals, cause allergic reactions. There are also questions about a possible link between paraben use and breast cancer. I have skin that reacts badly to lots of skin products, so it is a miracle that I didn't react to this. However, I wouldn't keep using it, simply because of the risk of allergy.

The other disadvantage, in my opinion, was its extreme thickness. It can actually be a little difficult to keep moving using this stuff, as it tended to drag a bit. Especially when the action (and the pace) starts to get a bit frantic. At one point I wondered whether it was a silicone-base given its thickness.

We're all in favour of lube. We all have times when nature (or time) doesn't permit enough natural lubrication, or when extra is desired for toy use, and so lubricant is something that we always have on hand. But this is just too thick for us. As far as we're concerned, Sylk is still the best.

Updated 18 months later: After much experimentation (because we had so much of it to use up), we discovered that Maximus is really good for toy use and also for anal play. That is because it is so incredibly thick and lasts so damn long. While I said earlier that I wouldn't keep using it because of the allergy risk, I had to change my mind on this one, as nothing else came close to it for those uses. More power to Maximus!

I'm sorry, I don't know what half these things do. Google and/or Wikipedia is your friend in situations like this. Anything with paraben in the name is used (as I said in the review) as a preservative, and an antimicrobial agent. I think the cellulose polymer is what makes it gloopy. As for the others, some are probably moisturisers. Good luck with your search.
